Laminated bamboo in architecture: Manufacturing, uses, and projects

In today’s architecture, the search for solutions that combine beauty, strength, and environmental friendliness has led to a growing interest in natural materials. One of the most notable is laminated bamboo. Treated for outdoor use on facades and exterior cladding, it is an alternative of great aesthetic and technical value that the GUBIA team has successfully incorporated into several of its projects.

Laminated bamboo, a technical and natural material

Laminated bamboo for outdoor use is a product made from strips of bamboo treated with eco-friendly fungicides, which are then assembled using adhesives that are resistant to moisture and temperature variations. This engineering process results in profiles with high dimensional stability. In addition, they are able to withstand extreme weather changes while retaining the flexibility and natural aesthetics of bamboo. The result is a structured, durable, and visually warm material, ideal for outdoor applications such as facades and brise-soleils.

Phyllostachys edulis laminated bamboo is a high-performance solution for outdoor applications, especially on wooden facades, thanks to its exceptional durability certified according to EN 350:2016 and CEN/TS 15083-1, with class 1/2 resistance to fungi and proven resistance to termites. Its suitability for use class 3.1, defined by standard EN 335:2013, guarantees effective protection against biotic damage caused by fungi and xylophagous insects—both larval cycle and isoptera—reinforced by treatments with ecological fungicides before and after processing. Sourced from responsibly managed, FSC-certified forests, this material combines sustainability and technical performance. In addition, the various profiles receive an additional finish in the workshop by immersion, which increases their resistance to photodegradation, subject to the recommended maintenance. This treatment, classified as A+ according to UNE-EN ISO 16000 for its minimal emission of volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde-free, guarantees not only durability and aesthetics, but also a commitment to health and the environment.

Advantages of laminated bamboo in outdoor applications

These laminated bamboo profiles offer outstanding weather resistance, even in long, slender pieces. Thanks to their laminated configuration and in-depth treatment, they are able to withstand continuous exposure to sunlight, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. With a durability rating of class 1-2, they are also an ideal solution for outdoor elements in coastal environments or those subject to harsh environmental conditions.

In addition, maintenance is minimal. Protective treatments applied before and after lamination ensure the aforementioned long-lasting defense against fungi and microorganisms, without the need for frequent interventions. This low maintenance, combined with its durability, makes bamboo a cost-effective and responsible choice.

Aesthetics and sustainability in balance

Bamboo provides unique visual warmth thanks to its natural tones and characteristic grain. Its elegant appearance allows for the creation of architectural envelopes that adapt to both contemporary and more traditional styles, offering versatility to architects and interior designers. As a fast-growing resource, bamboo is also a sustainable option that helps reduce carbon footprints and promotes the attainment of environmental certifications such as LEED or BREEAM.

Recent applications in GUBIA projects

Among our most recent projects, the FSC bamboo slat cladding in the VIP lounge at Palma de Mallorca Airport stands out. This project posed a significant technical challenge due to the complexity of the curved geometries, both concave and convex, that make up the vertical cladding and the undulating acoustic ceiling. The entire system was executed with a high degree of precision, complying with the most demanding fire reaction tests.

Another recent example is our work on Mandarin Oriental Residences in Madrid, where we continue to work on the exterior laminated bamboo elements. For this luxury residential complex, we have developed specific solutions for terrace ceilings and exterior brise-soleils, using 125×50 mm section profiles. The pieces have been treated with eco-friendly fungicides, sealed with epoxy resins at their ends, and finished by immersion with a highly weather-resistant, formaldehyde-free treatment. The ceiling slats are up to 7.5 meters long and CNC-machined to ensure they are secured with hidden stainless steel anchors, allowing for clean and precise technical execution.
