Bambú laminado en el nuevo edificio Mandarin Residences Madrid

Branded residence with LEED GOLD seal and bamboo laminate in the heart of Madrid

In the heart of the Salamanca district, Mandarin Oriental Residences Madrid is a new commitment to the “branded residence” concept in the capital. The project, promoted by Blasson Property and the investment fund Pictet, has the hallmark of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group: “prestige and level at your service”. The renowned architectural firm Bueso-Inchausti & Rein Arquitectos redefines with this new work residential luxury with a cutting-edge architectural proposal, which will have the LEED GOLD v4.1 Residential: Multifamily seal. This new complex will guarantee efficient spaces that take care of people and promote the use of sustainable materials and resources, where laminated bamboo stands out.

Laminated bamboo slats in façade lattices and exterior ceilings

Prioritizing not only aesthetics and comfort, but also energy efficiency and sustainability, the exterior spaces of the project advocate the use of laminated bamboo. The construction company in charge of the works, Fernandez Molina, has entrusted Grupo GUBIA with the development of the different bamboo elements involved in the project: façade lattices, cladding on the first floor of the common spaces and slatted ceilings on terraces and cantilevers.

The choice of laminated bamboo, a species with natural durability 1-2 tested under UNE-EN 350:2016 _ suitable for use class 3.1 to which wooden facades are exposed_, has been the result of our work for years with this material. This material is treated with ecological fungicides before and after its transformation in the final section.

In measures of 125x50mm and the vertical bamboo grain on all its faces, the chosen profile will allow working with slats up to 8m long in a single piece.

Sustainable building systems with design and functionality

Our technical department has contributed constructive solutions to the project that not only keep the project design but also guarantee the durability of the wood. “The design will age very well over time,” says Alejandro Bueso-Inchausti.

For the configuration of the façade lattices, the bamboo profiles are arranged 50 mm apart. CNC machined and assembled using stainless steel parts, the resulting module becomes a filter that balances solar protection and visual permeability. An element that will leave the workshop completely finished, favoring an unequaled speed of execution on site and guaranteeing a very precise execution.

For the ceiling, a hidden suspension system has been designed using invisible anchors, allowing each of the slats to be adjusted in three directions.

The first floor of the complex is entirely for the common enjoyment of the residents. Grupo Cosmic decoration studio led by Belén Domecq has also incorporated laminated bamboo cladding, dyed in walnut color, which will provide contrast and warmth to the most noble spaces.

Last week, a sample of the facade modules was assembled on site, confirming the speed and safety of the assembly. The sample validated the designed fastening system and will allow us to make the necessary adjustments before mass production.
