Lattices and three-dimensional ceilings made of laminated bamboo slats

The CARAT Sky Villas residential complex in Fuengirola stands out for its contemporary design and commitment to sustainability. Grupo GUBIA has left its mark on the façade and main entrance to the building through the design and installation of exterior lattices and a three-dimensional laminated bamboo ceiling. The material, which is FSC certified, ensures that it comes from responsibly managed forests.

The design is based on a triangular pattern that is repeated in the vertical latticework and the suspended ceiling of the lobby. The movement of the pieces creates a dynamic effect that interacts with the maritime environment. To bring this complex geometry to life, the team used 3D modeling and parametric design, which allowed them to manufacture standardized and precise pieces. Each module consists of 90×40mm laminated bamboo frames and 40×40mm laminated bamboo interior slats. Each module rotates relative to its neighbors on the XY plane and folds down on the Z plane. Pre-assembled in the workshop, on-site assembly is streamlined and completed in just two days.

The choice of laminated bamboo is due to its combination of aesthetics, stability, and sustainability. Treated with eco-friendly fungicides before and after processing, it achieves a durability rating of 1-2 according to the UNE EN 350-2 standard, suitable for facades in use class 3.1. Its slatted structure, even in slender pieces, gives it great dimensional stability against humidity, a fundamental condition in a coastal environment such as Fuengirola. Added to this is its high mechanical resistance, comparable to that of many tropical woods, and its versatility for applications such as exterior cladding and facades.
